Old Faithful Eruption Coverage
Honest, cadence-artefact-free measurement of Old Faithful eruption capture rate. 51.4% of distinct eruptions caught in the last 30 days.
What it does
Tracks how many distinct Old Faithful eruptions the DeepMap geyser classifier caught in the last 30 days, using GeyserTimes API v5 as the ground-truth denominator. This replaces the old cadence-artefact metric where we logged every ~10 minutes against ~90-minute eruptions.
Physics basis
The geyser classifier runs on IRIS WY.YFT.01.HHZ tremor data + local FDSN seismic context, trained on the GeyserTimes distinct-eruption record. Classification targets are bimodal (short-long) given the documented Old Faithful bimodality.
When it fires
Continuous IRIS stream; auto-retrain every 10 new eruptions.
What the customer receives
- Continuous tremor classification + eruption detection
- Per-eruption confidence score + waveform excerpt
- 30-day rolling coverage metric
- Bimodal short-long classification output
Operational numbers (live)
Engagement paths
Per-query, subscription, territorial-exclusive, and royalty-on-find structures are all available. Specific commercial terms are scoped after a technical-fit conversation.
Honest caveats
- 51.4% is the HONEST metric -- prior numbers (5.9% 'hit rate') were an artefact of logging every 10 min against 90-min eruptions and were discontinued in April 2026.
- Coverage improves with each retraining cycle; it is not a static product.
- Does not forecast individual eruptions with useful precision on the Old Faithful bulk product (that's the per-geyser narrow classifier product).
